Stoen Operator is testing an innovative method for assessing the condition of power cables
Cables are responsible for the safe and reliable transmission of electricity. Their good technical condition directly affects the stability of the grid. Stoen Operator, in cooperation with the company ModemTec, tested a method for detecting damage in medium-voltage cables.
In a highly urbanized area like Warsaw, every power outage is a real problem. Stoen Operator, responsible for supplying electricity to the capital, is implementing new solutions to improve the reliability of its grid. This time, a method for detecting partial discharges was tested—a phenomenon that often occurs before more serious cable insulation damage.
Together with the company ModemTec, a pilot test was carried out using the PD Doctor device.
"This is a technology that allows measurements without switching off the cable, which significantly speeds up diagnostics," explains Dymitr Bujakowski, Investment Manager at Stoen Operator.
The solution used by Stoen Operator not only allows for real-time data recording, but also for archiving and tracking changes over time. The system also enables setting alarm thresholds, which makes it possible to plan upgrades of specific sections of the grid in advance.
Introducing this type of diagnostics has a direct impact on key network quality indicators: SAIDI and SAIFI, which measure the duration and frequency of power outages. Detecting risks earlier means faster response times, a lower chance of unexpected outages, and reduced repair costs.
