ENERGA Operator with 3M Smart Meters
The number of smart meters (AMR – Automatic Meter Reading) installed on the Energa-Operator network has exceeded 3 million, meaning that such devices have already been installed for over 88% of the company’s more than 3.3 million customers. Energa-Operator is steadily working towards its goal of providing remote metering to all customers it supplies with electricity, no later than the end of 2026.
Energa-Operator has installed one million smart meters (AMRs) over the past two years alone. A significant portion of current installations involves the legal replacement of devices that were installed over the past decade as part of the company’s long-standing smart metering rollout program.
“When we started installing the first smart meters over a dozen years ago, we were somewhat of a testing ground – both for ourselves and other players in the market. Today, we are the national leader in smart metering, which is essential for the energy transition, the introduction of new services, and improving network management quality,” says Robert Świerzyński, CEO of Energa-Operator.
New benefits for customers
Smart meters offer many new benefits for customers. They can track their energy consumption or production (e.g., from a home installation) almost in real time via the “My Meter” app. Energa-Operator can also provide detailed measurement data upon request at no extra charge. This helps customers optimize their energy usage and choose the most suitable offer from energy retailers.
Remote communication with the meter also shortens the time needed to change a tariff group, eliminating the need for a technician to visit and reconfigure the device. Additionally, real-time data makes it possible to take advantage of dynamic pricing, already offered by some energy providers.
The new meters feature a communication port that, if requested by the customer, can be connected to the home device network. This enables automation of household appliances based on current electricity prices, for example, when using dynamic tariffs or grid flexibility services.
Thanks to the high share of smart meters among all metering devices, Energa-Operator has been billing based on actual readings for some time, eliminating estimated forecasts that could differ from a customer’s real energy use.
Modern and secure meters
Energa-Operator’s smart meters can transmit data via power lines (PLC) or, when equipped with a fallback communication modem (LTE), through the mobile network. The devices can automatically determine the best way to transmit data at any given moment. They can also switch the phase used to send the signal via PLC to the concentrator to improve data transfer to the central system. The additional LTE modem allows data collection from meters in areas where there’s no infrastructure for power line communication.
The company places strong emphasis on the security of reading data, which is encrypted during transmission. The meter models used by Energa-Operator undergo strict testing in both lab and field conditions. Furthermore, Energa-Operator requires that more than 50% of delivered products originate from EU member states or countries with agreements ensuring equal treatment of businesses, or from countries covered by EU directive 2014/25/EU, based on decisions by the European Council.
