PSE will purchase equipment for power substations

Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE) has signed a contract with Olmex S.A. to purchase four compensation reactors. These devices will be installed at power substations in northern Poland. The contract is valued at nearly PLN 111 million (EUR 26.5 million). The equipment is scheduled for delivery by August 2029.

The purchase of reactive power compensation devices is part of a program to improve the reliability of electricity supply, reduce power losses in transmission networks, and decrease the load on transformers and power lines.

Reactors are essential for the efficient and reliable operation of power systems. They are used for reactive power compensation, which refers to power that is not converted into useful work and cannot be used to power electrical devices. However, a certain amount of reactive power is necessary for the proper grid functioning, and it must be maintained at an appropriate level. Reactors are specifically designed for this purpose.

The purchase of these reactors is part of the Transmission Network Development Plan for 2025-2034—the largest investment program in the history of PSE.

Over the next decade, the plan includes the construction of 4,700 km of new 400 kV power lines, 28 new substations, and the modernization of 110 existing substations.

The program's implementation will significantly increase the potential for integrating new renewable energy sources (RES), including power evacuation from offshore wind farms, photovoltaic plants, and onshore wind farms. Additionally, the project will enable the connection of a nuclear power plant in Pomerania and small modular reactors (SMRs).

PSE S.A. is a strategic state-owned company responsible for ensuring the reliable operation of the power system. The company is currently executing the largest investment program in its history. By 2037, PSE plans to construct over 5,400 km of new 400 kV transmission lines and 30 power substations, as well as modernize 110 existing substations. Additionally, the company is planning the construction of a north-to-south direct current (DC) transmission link across the country. The total estimated investment over the next decade exceeds PLN 64 billion
