Enea Operator builds TETRA-standard communication system

Enea Operator has signed an agreement with Motorola Solutions for the implementation of a communication system based on the TETRA standard across the company’s entire concession area. TETRA is a European standard for digital dispatch communication that ensures continuous encrypted voice communication and data transmission. It is radio-based and designed primarily for institutions whose operational nature requires stable and reliable communications, particularly under extreme conditions – for example, during prolonged power outages.

Following the contract signing, Enea Operator will work closely with Motorola Solutions to enhance the security of emergency communications in its operating area. In critical situations, the new communication system will strengthen communication security and eliminate dependence on GSM network operators. The purpose of building the TETRA system in Enea Operator is to obtain a reliable radio communication system for both voice communication and the control and monitoring of equipment within the medium-voltage (MV) network. For this purpose, a plan has been developed identifying base station installation sites and defining the main assumptions for the construction of the entire system.

The project will involve establishing around 130 base station locations – approximately 100 at the company’s own 110 kV substations, with the remaining 30 at sites leased from external entities. The new system will ensure 36 hours of power supply in the event of a major outage and loss of voltage in the grid. The entire fleet of around 1,000 Enea Operator service vehicles will be equipped with transceiver terminals, along with portable terminals for field technicians. At the same time, the company will construct and modernise antenna towers and technical containers at the base station locations.
