The state-owned giant, PGE, will build 80 energy storage facilities.
The construction of an investment project has begun, which will enhance our energy security and lower electricity prices. At the same time, PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna has announced its plans for the coming years. A wave of investments is on the horizon.
The construction of the large-scale Żarnowiec Battery Energy Storage System has officially begun. With a capacity of 262 MW and approximately 981 MWh, it is set to be operational in two years at a cost of over 1.5 billion PLN. This will be the largest investment of its kind in the country and one of the largest in Europe.
"It will ensure better energy balancing in the power grid by supplying power to the system during periods of high demand and insufficient renewable energy production while storing excess energy during times of overproduction from renewable sources," explained Dariusz Marzec, President of PGE.
PGE has announced plans to build over 80 energy storage facilities by 2035, with a total capacity exceeding 10,000 MWh. The company intends to invest 18 billion PLN in these projects, which will include all types of energy storage: large- and small-scale battery systems as well as the Młoty pumped-storage power plant. Currently, the group operates energy storage facilities with a combined capacity of nearly 7,000 MWh. Ultimately, the stored energy will be capable of supplying 2.5 million Polish households around the clock.
Additionally, PGE is working on a project to develop 75 distributed energy storage facilities across Poland, with a total capacity exceeding 6,000 MWh.
"Flexibility is the Holy Grail today. Those who quickly build energy storage systems will gain a significant advantage, as they will be the first in the market. At the same time, they will contribute to the security of the entire system," emphasized Jakub Jaworowski, Minister of State Assets.
