PGE Dystrybucja to buy 1.7M smart meters with LTE450

Lublin, Poland – July 2025. PGE Dystrybucja, Poland’s leading electricity distribution operator, continues its smart grid transformation with a new major tender for the successive supply of over 1.7 million one-phase and three-phase remote-reading electricity meters for low-voltage customers.

Building on the 2023 Smart Meter Rollout & LTE 450 Network

  • In September 2023, PGE Dystrybucja launched a mass replacement of traditional meters, installing 982,300 remote-reading meters by the end of that year — roughly 17.3% of all customer points.

  • The smart meter initiative is funded under the Modernisation Fund, with a grant exceeding PLN 84 million. The company aims for 100% customer coverage by 2030 (legally mandated 80% by 2028)

  • As part of this modernization, in 2023 PGE Dystrybucja contracted Ericsson to build an LTE 450 communications network, which includes 500+ base stations covering ~40% of Poland. The network serves as the backbone for meter connectivity, integration of renewables, distributed energy sources, and dispatcher communications.

This new tender marks the next chapter in PGE Dystrybucja’s smart metering journey — building on 2023’s strong foundation and leveraging the LTE 450 network to ensure resilient, future-ready grid connectivity. By coordinating massive deployments, advanced communications, and cybersecurity, PGE is laying the groundwork for dynamic tariffs, demand response, and full digital integration.
