Digitalization at TAURON Dystrybucja: expansion of the teletransmission system

As part of its initiative to enhance digital oversight of the power grid, TAURON Dystrybucja is expanding its telecommunication system. The investment, which will cost nearly PLN 40 million, will be supported by funds secured through the National Recovery Plan (KPO).

Under this project, TAURON Dystrybucja will expand its telecommunication system based on the MPLS TP standard [Multiprotocol Label Switching Transport Profile] across its ten regional branches. This will involve installing and commissioning 300 complete MPLS TP devices at power stations and other critical company-owned locations.

The system will provide essential functionality and bandwidth to support the digitization of the power grid supervision system. This marks a milestone in the company’s development, allowing it to leverage modern digital technologies to meet both current and future needs.

What Is the MPLS TP System Used For?

The MPLS TP telecommunication system is a comprehensive network comprising multiple devices—TAURON Dystrybucja plans to eventually deploy between 800 and 900 units. These devices, interconnected via fiber optic cables, enable the transfer of vast amounts of data at exceptional speeds.

With the MPLS TP devices and their management system, a modern digital telecommunication system will be established, ensuring secure and fast data transmission to meet the company’s growing demands.

Digitization for the Benefit of Customers

Every new investment or infrastructure modernization by TAURON Dystrybucja is ultimately aimed at benefiting customers—and this project is no exception. The implementation of the MPLS TP telecommunication system will take digitization to a higher level, paving the way for more advanced technological solutions that foster innovation and the company’s continued growth.

Marcin Marzyński, Vice President of TAURON Dystrybucja for Customer Affairs, highlights the customer benefits of this advanced telecommunication system:

"This project will not only enhance cybersecurity but also reduce the frequency and duration of power outages. The system’s implementation will improve energy supply quality and streamline online data reading from smart meters. As a result, we will be able to offer more tailored tariffs and services to meet individual customer needs."

He adds:

"Customers will receive better and more personalized products. Additionally, our employees will benefit, as the system will allow remote execution of certain tasks, reducing the need for field visits and improving workplace safety."

A Package of Benefits

The system will deliver a wide range of advantages, including:

✅ Automation and remote operation of devices in energy facilities

✅ Automatic reconfiguration of medium- and low-voltage grid operations

✅ Network diagnostics and performance analysis

✅ Enhanced cybersecurity measures

✅ Implementation of an advanced Technical Security System to safeguard Critical Infrastructure

✅ Digital protection systems for power lines

✅ Full online access to measurement data

✅ Maximized utilization of smart electricity meters

✅ Digitization of technical security systems

✅ Capability to build a digital TETRA radio communication system

This project aligns with the digital transformation goals of the economy and public services sector while also meeting legal requirements imposed on Distribution System Operators (DSOs).
